A homage to art nouveau ideas, this piece is hand carved to create the sides. Turned components are used to detail the corners. Another way of showing my students a different fabrication technique.
Another piece showing the use of laminated components. I made all the moulds to shape the laminates. The side elevation, based on an X format, creates a lot of strength. The fabric was hand woven. The timber finish is fence paint, usually used on iron, with an interesting metallic texture.
A gift for my mother, this piece, made from blackwood, myrtle, sassafrass and apple timbers was my way of showing my students something completely machine made, virtually no hands on its fabrication. The design is based on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Also made whilst lecturing, this lamp has turned spalted ash, and myrtle components. The shade is made from moulded fibreglass, resign and Japanese paper, sand blasted.
I lectured at the School of Art, Launceston, Tasmania in 1987. In order to show my students a variety of techniques, I built a series of around ten different pieces. This one combines turned components and features a veneered carcass. This particular version was built in Brisbane by Robert Dunlop.
